An important update for those who have had COVID-19 and want to help others. A new Donor Centre dedicated to collecting convalescent plasma in the search for effective treatments for COVID-19 has now opened in Chelmsford. The new centre is located at Victoria House, Duke Street, Chelmsford, CM1 1JE.
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is leading a major trial programme, on behalf of the government, to collect convalescent plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19.
This plasma may contain antibodies which could stop the virus spreading. Following collection – via a safe and easy process taking about one hour and 15 minutes – the plasma can be transfused to COVID-19 patients whose immune systems are struggling to develop their own antibodies.
Donations are urgently needed ahead as we find ourselves amidst a second wave.
Donors are advised to continue keep donating plasma as normal even during the lockdown. Travel to donate plasma is classed as essential travel under Government guidelines.
