Monday
Busy day in Westminster. I host a big meeting in Parliament to launch a new report into small businesses and how to help them grow. The report has gathered data from all over the UK and will be very helpful for local councils and policy makers. I'm pleased to read that Chelmsford is one of the most successful parts of the county to start a company!
I grab a sandwich for lunch as I race to the House of Commons to ask the defence minister about the contract for next generation radar systems for the Royal Navy. The previous systems have been developed in Great Baddow at BAE and I want to make sure these skills stay in the UK. The minister is very supportive. The Prime Minister comes to brief MPs on latest EU negotiations and I ask her for update on citizens rights issues - progress is being made. Then there is a long debate on the future of driverless cars and road safety. Eventually, I eat that lunchtime sandwich -at 7pm!
Tuesday - I have helped to arrange a meeting with Essex County Councillors and our Essex Police and Crime commissioner to discuss local issues. I'm extremely pleased that more than a dozen of the Essex MPs can come to the meeting. We have a long discussion on roads and railways, housing, traveller issues, crime and social care. Progress is being made but there is more to be done. I chair a discussion for "future leaders" from across the world who are having a conference in London. The group brings together representatives from the UK, India, Pakistan, USA, Indonesia, Kenya and Bangladesh. They are discussing energy policy and recycling. I am very impressed.
Wednesday - There is a debate on social care. It is really important as it is about how we look after our elderly and most vulnerable. It is always interesting to hear the views from people from all across the country. It is clear that with an increase in the number of older people we are going to have to find new ways to pay for and provide care. I raise some local examples and support a proper consultation which also looks at best practice from other countries. I agree to do an interview on Channel 4 on the latest twists and turns of Brexit talks. Another late night.
Thursday - I'm looking for a new assistant to help with constituency issues and events. MPs only have a tiny staff so it's important to try to find the right team. As a new member I would like to have people with experience of working with an MP. I spend much of the day going through the many CVs and discussing references, before heading off to Stansted Airport for a RyanAir flight to Northern Italy.
Friday & Saturday - I join a group of German and British MPs, economists and central bankers at a conference to discuss the economic outlook, and Brexit negotiation issues for financial services. This is really important for the jobs of many Chelmsford people working in banking, insurance etc. This Anglo-German conference has been happening for over 30 years and I feel very honoured to be invited. Brexit is a big issue in the UK and it is easy to forget that many of those in other countries have much more pressing priorities. The big picture, long term perspective from some of those present is very helpful too.
