Vicky Ford MP has spent time with Rob Saggs from homeless charity Chess Homeless. Originally set up by Churches Together in Chelmsford, CHESS Homeless has 32 bed spaces spread over its 6 properties including the night shelter. CHESS also operates a winter project of a further ten beds between December and March. Last winter seventy six individuals spent one night or more at the winter project and no person in need who wanted a bed for the night was turned away. Many people who come to the winter project only stay for a single night or short period before finding other accommodation.
Vicky heard the exciting plans CHESS has to extend their provision which would allow them to provide another ten rooms.
Rob said “ We are committed to offering an end to end service for homeless adults, giving them the opportunity they need for a better life. Our model consists of outreach, support accommodation and working with partners like Wingspan Works in Chelmsford for training and employment”.
Vicky added, “I know many people in Chelmsford are extremely concerned about the welfare of those who are sleeping rough, many of whom have very complex needs. The Government is committed to eliminating rough sleeping by 2027 and we have seen many successful projects making a huge difference in parts of the UK. Having an additional 10 shelter beds here in Chelmsford will make a huge difference. I will support CHESS with grant applications, but this will need donations too.
