In the middle of July, I was joined by a large group of young people from across Chelmsford for my summer work experience programme.
They spent the first day in Parliament where they split into smaller groups to attend a wide variety of debates and select committee meetings on a huge number of issues from nuclear energy, to justice, to transport and reproductive rights.
They shared feedback with each other in a “debrief” session at the end of the day.
The next day they spent the morning at Essex County Council learning more about the role of local government.
Later on, as the ”community” part of the programme, the students and I were joined by volunteers from Chelmsford Litter Wombles. We litter picked together whilst chatting about different issues and walking in small groups. We collected over 20 bags of rubbish.
I joined the group that collected 9 bags of rubbish from the pavements and hedges between Anglia Ruskin University and the police station.
On the final day of the programme, some of the students accompanied me on Constituency visits and the others attended workshops on what is involved in the work of an MP covering protocols involved for MP's work, handling GDPR, dealing with Casework queries and managing Press enquiries. In the afternoon, we split into teams to deliver my Annual Survey and Reporting Back leaflet.
