Regular readers will know that I loathe plastic waste and rubbish. Last month, I joined Chelmsford Litter Wombles on a clean up near Sainsbury's in Springfield. I was shocked by the amount of rubbish and wrote to Sainsbury’s head office.
They have now let me know that they have increased the cleaning support this store receives every day. They say they are are looking into the volume of waste over a period of time to understand whether they need an uplift in service provision from their contract cleaning services.
I particularly asked them about the blue gloves provided for the petrol station at the store. They are going to look into this. I hope they find a non-plastic alternative.
Chelmsford City Council has refused to place litter bins near the bus stops by the store. It should not have to be the responsibility of volunteers and local residents to provide waste collection services so I have written Chelmsford City Council to ask again for litter bins at this location. In the meantime the Litter Wombles have taken to placing some green bags there and replacing them themselves.
Thank you Wombles.
