They say a week’s a long time in politics - well that was definitely true of the last week of term!
Monday
Packed House of Commons for the Prime Minister as she updates MPs on latest stage of EU negotiations, good progress being made, but lots of questions ahead. I ask her about priorities - it’s so important to stay focussed.
I host a meeting on cybercrime and the NHS computer attacks earlier in the year. We are setting up an “all party parliamentary group” on cybercrime which I’ve been asked to chair.
Late votes on tax issues....
Tuesday
Fascinating morning with Science and Technology Select Committee. Thinking about the “digital revolution”. What will the world look like in 2028 and how can we help prepare?
Back to Westminster where the police minister announces new plans. This could lead to 100 more officers in Essex next year, a welcome start, but I tell the minister we also need a fairer funding share across the country.
Add my name to the amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill which allows flexibility on exit date in case of last minute issues in the negotiation - so glad this is proposed as I suggested it weeks ago!
More late votes on tax issues ... we’re cutting taxes for those on lower incomes and for first time buyers.
Wednesday
PMQs focused on plans for health service this winter. Good news of lots more flu jabs, beds and doctors this winter.
After 2 months the debate on the committee stage of EU Withdrawal Bill draws to a close. All the issues I had are now addressed bringing transparency, giving Parliament a vote and keeping flexibility on date. Good stuff.
At 10.20pm we finally vote it through. I’ve missed the Christmas party. 11.09pm train from Stratford, home by midnight.
Thursday
Dentist and finishing emails.
6.30 pm. So honoured, reading a lesson at the carol service in Chelmsford Cathedral. Beautiful. My last (and best) appointment of the year.
Parliament is now in recess- Happy Christmas! Will be back in the New Year.
